What Standards are followed here?
All learning within my setting is play based and tailored to the needs and interests of the children I am working with. The national standards and frameworks are used to guide and inform my practice and the teaching opportunities I provide, alongside child-directed play and learning.
Within my setting I follow different national standards of care dependant on the age and stage of the children attending. For all children and young people I adhere to the Getting It Right For Every Child (GIRFEC) standards, ensuring each child’s individual needs are met.
I also ensure at all times the child’s rights are valued and supported. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the base standard for children’s rights and sets out the fundamental rights of all children. The UNCRC sets out the specific rights that all children have to help fulfil their potential, including rights relating to health and education, leisure and play, fair and equal treatment, protection from exploitation and the right to be heard.
For most children the framework I follow will be dependant on their age, transitioning between the frameworks at approximately age 3. However, where children have additional support needs (be that developmentally ahead or delayed), I will tailor their learning environment to their individual needs, working from a number of different frameworks where necessary.
For infants and young children I follow the Realising The Ambition: Being Me (RTA) framework. This guidance document provides key information about the characteristics of child development and what needs to be provided for babies and young children as they learn and grow. The guidance covers pedagogy and practice and extends provides connections between this early framework into all aspects of the early level of Curriculum for Excellence (CFE) used across nurseries and schools. The guidance is provided with a focus on the learning environment of children, using interactions, experiences and spaces to define and raise the expectations of what high quality childcare may look like in different settings.
For children aged 3+ I also follow Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence framework. Just like attending an ELC Nursery placement, your child will learn and prepare for starting school, experiencing the same educational opportunities while receiving the personalised care and attention available to them within a small group childminding setting.
